About the Journal

Besari: Journal of Social and Cultural Studies is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to providing a platform for critical and constructive dialogues in the fields of social sciences and cultural studies.

The name "Besari" honors the legacy of Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari, the most prominent cleric of Ponorogo, Tegalsari. Etymologically, "besari" is derived from the term basyari (Arabic: بشري), which means "humanist." Reflecting this heritage, the journal is established to interrogate, scrutinize, and support the multifaceted roles of humans as social and cultural beings, transcending geographical, communal, and disciplinary boundaries.

Published biannually (June and December) by PC Ikatan Sarjana Nahdlatul Ulama (ISNU) Ponorogo, Indonesia, a regional board of Ikatan Sarjana Nahdlatul Ulama, an autonomous sub-organization of Nahdlatul Ulama, that is run mainly by young scholars (sarjana), in collaboration with LP2M Institut Agama Islam Sunan Giri (INSURI) Ponorogo, the journal serves as a hub for scholars—particularly the younger generation—to contribute to the "awakening of scholars" (Nahdlatul Ulama).
